We restore and empower through care
Abella supports families in the East Bay by offering respite and childcare services for individuals with autism — so caregivers can be taken care of too.

Our mission
At Abella, we provide compassionate in-home respite care and childcare services for individuals with autism and their families. Through both Full Service and Employer of Record (EOR) options, caregivers can choose the model that works best for their needs — whether that means we provide trained staff or support you in hiring someone you trust. We prioritize quality, reliability, collaboration, and respect to ensure every caregiver feels supported and every individual is safe, valued, and empowered. Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions we get
-
Yes. We are also partnered with the East Bay Regional center. Here is our vendor number: HB1484. We’re in the process of expanding to more areas in California.
-
We partner with the Regional Center to provide both Respite Care and Childcare in two models:
Full Service: We recruit, train, and manage providers for your family.
Employer of Record (EOR): You choose your own provider (family, friend, or someone you trust). We handle payroll, background checks, and paperwork.
Both respite and childcare are available in either model, depending on your family’s needs and your Regional Center referral.
You can learn more from our “find care” page.
-
Currently we accept referrals from East Bay Regional Center. We plan to expand to more areas.
-
If you have authorized hours from your regional center, we won’t charge you for our services.
-
Respite is care provided to give the parent or caregiver a break from ongoing responsibilities. Childcare is care provided so parents can work, attend school, or handle daily obligations.
-
In the EOR model, you (the family) choose your own provider — a trusted friend, relative, or someone you recruit. Our agency becomes the “employer of record,” which means we handle payroll, background checks, taxes, and required paperwork. You keep control over who provides the care, while we manage the administrative side.
-
Please follow the steps on the “services” page.
-
Yes, our providers have completed training, and must demonstrate competency before being allowed to provide care. Our providers have crime-free backgrounds and safe driving records.
-
Services can be arranged on a flexible schedule. We currently do not offer over night sessions. Scheduling is considered based on individual care provider availability and client needs.
-
The primary location we serve are Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, and Livermore. Other service areas include Concord, Hayward, Fremont, Danville, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Union City, and Walnut Creek. We’re expanding to include more east bay locations.
-
Respite care can’t be scheduled during school, can’t overlap with other care recipient therapy appointments, and can’t be used while the caregiver is at work. Unfortunately, respite care is not intended to be a childcare provider, but is intended to help caregivers recharge from caregiving duties. We do offer childcare services which serves this purpose.
-
Respite care and childcare is intended for 1-1 sessions. However, if the care provider and the primary caregiver are comfortable with an alternative arrangement, certain exceptions can be made.
-
Yes, if you are matched with a provider, you’ll be able to set up weekly hours with them. You can also book additional sessions with other providers if you need more sessions.
-
The respite or childcare sessions take place in a designated location that you set. Usually this is at your home. You can work out an optimal location that works for you and your provider.
-
No problem. We can adapt to any of your needs. If you end respite care after some time and want more services afterwards, we can add you back on to our waitlist.
-
That can happen. We’ll see if we can work something out, and if we can’t, then we can reassign you to another provider.
-
At the moment, we don’t take insurance or medicare. If you’re referred from one of our partners, we’ll cover you for the hours you’re eligible for. Otherwise, you’ll need to pay out of pocket.
